If you haven’t already heard, the 2020 Annual Meeting will be held in the beautiful city of Toronto, Canada. As a Canadian, I am beyond excited for the Meeting to be happening so close to home and that everyone will have a chance to see how awesome Toronto is (especially when it’s not freezing cold). If you’re not already set on registering, here’s five reasons why you should renew your passports so you can come on down!
Immerse yourself in a variety of unique topics
This is the chance to learn all about the topics that you’ve been curious about but your professor only touched upon for 2 minutes in class. With speakers who are truly the best of the best, you’re sure to learn so much to help you become a better doctor and provide the best care for your patients. Topics I’m excited about include Dr. Andrich’s presentation on sports vision training and Dr. Press and Dr. Feinberg’s symposium on vertical heterophoria.
Check out the exhibitors and snag some equipment
This is the best place to get all the equipment you’ve thought about purchasing but sat out on due to shipping, duty fees, or just the inconvenience of ordering. You’ve had a long year of school and you’ve done well so you definitely deserve that set of loose prisms. Ever wonder what it’s like to use a FITLIGHT? This is the place to try it out! Don’t miss out on some great exhibitors including Bernell, Good-Lite, HTS, and many more.
Rub shoulders with successful vision therapy doctors and possibly your next employer
The Annual Meeting is a great opportunity to network with doctors to put your name forward and make an impression. If you’re looking for a job, the student/doctor mixer is THE event to chat with vision therapy doctors who are looking to hire an associate!
Step out to the gorgeous Toronto harbourfront
After soaking up all the education and chatting with all the new colleagues and doctors you meet, take a break and step out right onto the Toronto harbourfront. Stretch your legs with the miles (or kilometers in Canadian) of pedestrian or cycling paths. Great tourist attractions like the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, and the Art Gallery of Ontario are just steps away. If you’re a baseball fan, catch a Toronto Blue Jays game at Roger’s Arena. Or if you’d rather have some quiet, escape the bustle of downtown and take a ferry ride over to Centre Island for a breathtaking view of the Toronto skyline.
Subsidize your travel with the COVD Annual Meeting Travel Grant
You already have your student loans to worry about – COVD doesn’t want the cost of travelling to prevent you from attending. You’ll really want to take advantage of the generous travel grant!
The grant is open to all students or residents in an accredited optometry program and the only requirement is that you must be a member of COVD (it’s free and easy to join!) <https://www.covd.org/page/join>
process requires you to submit an application, after which you’ll be sent a
writing assignment that you have 30 days to complete.
The deadline to apply is November 25 so make sure to send those applications in! <https://www.covd.org/page/travelgrants>
